2016 Brings many changes to our garden - we brought it HOME!

2016 brought many changes to the way we garden.  Due to the cancer making it more difficult for me to go to the garden property and be out in the sun, on the rough terrain and get anything accomplished, and the fact that I just can't handle doing much at a time anymore, Mike and some helpers brought home the tubs from the garden in Milan, MI.  We set up a Garden Restoration Party over Memorial Weekend and several friends came by to help us pull it all together.  We painted planters, planted flowers and produce, and weeded overly neglected beds.  By the end of the weekend, it looked amazing!  We celebrated with a BarBQue with ribs, hot dogs, salads and Sangria.   Mike and I want to thank everybody that came over and helped us, and continued to come by over the summer and help finish and maintain things.
Marcy Kat managed to help us remove 4 Moles that had been terrorizing the yard and flower beds which was a bonus we did not expect.  She is an amazing cat we took in as a rescued Feral from the community.  She still enjoys being outdoors, and we do keep her on a harness and leash, but we do believe she would never try to leave us...she is one spoiled feline!
Our Fall harvest was interrupted by surgery...again.  I had apparently overdone it working in the yard and ended up needing a partial hip replacement on Sept. 22, and as I type this in February 2017, am still in rehab doing physical therapy as a result... HOPING that 2017 will be a better year.  I am hoping that I'll be able to keep up with the blog posts better for 2017, my apologies for having neglected things, it was a really bad year...let's just leave it at that.
Our goal for 2017 is to be able to move out of the mobile home community into a "real house" with a yard of our own we can have full control of. The management here just does not seem to think the residents should actually be able to use their yards as a living space... and I for one, am sick of being stuck indoors as a result.
Pray for us that this dream can come true... we'll do our best to keep ya'll updated!    tlc

I have been interested in nature since my youth.  My favorite class in school was any science that involved plants and I graduated with a major in Science as a result.
I grew up in a home where gardening was an everyday event - Dad had the produce covered and Mom was amazing in the flower garden. Together, they knew how to preserve the harvest by canning, freezing, or cold storage of the root veggies.

Today, I honor their memory by caring for both gardens  and  preserving and sharing our harvest.  I hope to share my experience and help keep the tradition alive.  Healthy living includes healthy eating and nothing is more healthy that fresh produce!

Since my diagnosis of Metastatic Breast Cancer in 2010, finding the cancer has now spread to my bones; making it difficult for me to tend to the traditional "flat ground" garden, we modified everything to make it easier for me to tend to my crops, by raising them using otherwise discarded Livestock Water Troughs.  It is so much easier for me to get around and tend my garden now, despite my physical inability to work the ground... I recommend this for anyone with mobility issues!!
